THC oil storage – Preserve potency and shelf life

THC oils like Rick Simpson Oil and Full Extract Cannabis Oil are gaining popularity for their reported health and wellness benefits. However, THC oils are very concentrated and sensitive to heat, light, and oxygen exposure. Improper storage can cause THC oils to lose potency quickly.

Choose the right extraction method

How the THC oil is extracted and processed makes a big difference in shelf life. Solvent extractions that use alcohol or hydrocarbon solvents like butane or propane tend to retain more terpenes and cannabinoids than other methods. It gives solvent-based THC oils antioxidant and antimicrobial properties for better stability. CO2 extraction is another top choice as it pulls a complete profile of compounds from the cannabis plant. Avoid THC oils using heat or excess oxygen during processing, as this degrades potency faster.

Store in an opaque and airtight container

Light and air are enemies of THC oils. Over time, exposure to UV light and oxygen causes terpenes and cannabinoids like THC to oxidize and break down. Choose an opaque container like colored glass or a stainless steel bottle. Clear glass lets in UV rays, reducing shelf life. Make sure the container has an airtight seal. Plastic containers work of very high quality, but glass or metal is ideal for complete air protection. Add silicone containers for extra protection against light and oxygen. Small individual serving sizes also help limit air exposure.

Keep in a cool and dark place

Store THC oils in a cool area away from excess heat and light. Refrigeration extends shelf life, as low temperatures slow down oxidation and degradation of compounds. However, extreme cold causes condensation inside the bottle leading to mold growth. The ideal storage temperature is 60-70°F. Avoid storing THC oil on countertops, windowsills, or anywhere near heat sources like appliances. Choose a cupboard, pantry, or closet in a temperature-stable area. Cover with a dark bag or box for added protection from light. Basements, cellars, and garage spaces often work well.

Monitor for signs of spoilage

Check THC oils occasionally for changes in appearance, aroma, taste, and effects. Separation, cloudiness, darkening color, or thickening consistency indicates aging and oxidation. An unpleasant bitter taste, harsh throat feels, and diminished effects are also signs oil potency has declined. Most solvent-extracted THC oils have a shelf life of around 12 months when stored properly. CO2 oils last 18-24 months. Discard any oils with poor aroma, taste, or appearance instead of consuming them.

Avoid temperature fluctuations

Frequent temperature changes haveten the degradation of thc oil. Opening and closing the refrigerator let in warm air that leads to moisture condensation. Leave refrigerated oils in one stable spot instead of shifting to different areas. When taking oils out of the fridge, allow the container to reach room temp before opening. This prevents inner and outer glass temperature differences that draw in humid air. After dosing, immediately return the oil to the storage area. Consistent stable temps are the goal. Properly stored THC oils retain optimal cannabinoid and terpene levels for full benefits.
